about

“Rusted Beats: The Lost Album” is the follow up to 2009’s “Beats Never Rust,” a hip-hop tribute to Neil Young. A couple of friends made the album in 2014, but scrapped it for unknown reasons. Five years later, the album has resurfaced, but the beats have turned to rust!

While the first album focused more on Neil’s greatest hits (Heart of Gold, Cortez the Killer, Like a Hurricane), this one’s for the Rusties – deep cuts from the 70’s, songs from Young’s 90’s resurgence, and modern-day Neil. Inspired by the stage theatrics of the Alchemy tour, this album uses stage banter and quotes to move seamlessly throughout the album while Neil covers a variety of topics.

Production for the album started when Danny began messing around with Ableton Live, an upgrade from the Acid Pro software he’d been using on previous albums. The beats were coming out fresh and groovy, so Michael kept feeding Danny samples until they had an hour’s worth of material. With the beat portion done, Michael worked on the tracklisting and quotes, which the pair finished, but stopped before the final step: releasing it!

It wasn’t until recently, when a fan sparked up interest about the first album, that the duo decided to put out the follow-up. Upon re-listening, they were perplexed why it never came out. “It never had any artwork,” Danny remarked, so Michael enlisted the help of A. Shea to come up with an album cover that incorporated the idea of a lost mic turned to rust.

With that, the album was finally ready for public release. So, grab your headphones, because this one is all about the detail. Pay attention – there won’t be a test at the end, but you may pick up a thing or two. Enjoy the ride!
